Asana Lab: Twists

ASANA LAB – Twists & Spinal Mobility

Saturday 7 February | 11:00am–1:00pm
Taught by Clare Lovelace

ASANA LAB is a deep-dive workshop series designed to refine your physical yoga practice through intelligent alignment, embodied awareness, and practical skill-building. Each session focuses on a specific family of postures, offering you the tools to move with more ease, strength, and confidence, while honouring your body’s unique structure and needs.

In this ASANA LAB, we explore twists and spinal mobility, one of the most essential and misunderstood categories of yoga postures.

Twists are powerful practices for the body and nervous system. They help maintain spinal health, improve mobility, support digestion, and cultivate a sense of internal clarity and renewal. When done well, twists feel spacious and nourishing. When rushed or forced, they can create compression and strain. This workshop is about learning the difference.

Clare will guide you through how to twist from integrity rather than force, exploring:

  • How the spine is designed to rotate

  • Where twists should initiate and where they should soften

  • How to create length before rotation

  • How breath supports safe and effective twisting

  • How to modify for different bodies, injuries, and levels of experience

You’ll learn how to use props skilfully to support spinal length, stability, and ease, and how to adapt twisting postures to suit your proportions; whether you’re stiff, hypermobile, or somewhere in between.

The workshop will include detailed exploration of a range of seated, standing, and supine twists, such as:

  • Seated spinal twists

  • Revolved standing postures

  • Supine twists for restoration and nervous system regulation

This is a spacious, educational, and embodied practice — ideal for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of twists, improve spinal mobility, or bring more intelligence into their regular yoga classes.

Suitable for all levels.
